Here I talk about making picture books and illustrations, the way my life influences my work and the materials and processes I use. Since I love to use collage, textiles, embroidery, sewing and knitting to make books and illustrations, there is a fair amount of textile talk here too. My doll-making comes in through character development and story creation, so to try and bring all of these elements together I chose ‘Stitching Picture Books’ as the name. When I make dummy books and sketch books I usually stitch them together too, so it feels extra appropriate.

I have this tiny red suitcase which contains everything I might need to make some small narrative play. A doll, or a picture, or a tiny book. I take it with me when we travel, and even just opening it and seeing all of the colourful contents gets me in the mood for creation. My newsletter feels a little bit like this suitcase; opening my suitcase to show you what I’m working on and with. I send out posts once a week which arrive in your email inbox (or you can choose to read using the Substack app if you prefer). I’ll also offer some little pieces of creative play to try yourself if you fancy it, because everyone needs to play sometimes!

If you’re wondering what sort of creative play I sometimes include, it tends to be quick and easy and often small in size (because it comes out of my tiny creative space suitcase). Here’s a video of the play from one newsletter; making a tiny folded concertina sketchbook to draw or collage or write in.
