I decided to name this illustration exhibition
‘Start Where You Are’, which is the first part of a quote by Arthur Ashe which reads:
‘Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can.’
This quote is pinned up on my studio wall and brings me so much encouragement and reflects my approach to my illustration work so well that it seemed a fitting title for this event, my first ever solo exhibition. I am starting where I am: in Trieste. I am using what I have: wool and paper and fabric and the time available around a busy family life. I am doing what I can: drawing and writing, collaging, knitting and sewing. ‘Inizia da dove sei’, che è la prima parte di una citazione di Arthur Ashe che recita:
‘Inizia da dove sei, usa ciò che hai, fai ciò che puoi.’
Questa citazione è appesa al muro del mio studio e mi incoraggia molto e riflette così bene il mio approccio al mio lavoro di illustrazione che mi è sembrato un titolo appropriato per questo evento, la mia prima mostra personale in assoluto. Sto iniziando da dove sono: a Trieste. Sto usando ciò che ho: lana, carta, tessuto e il tempo a disposizione per una vita familiare impegnata. Sto facendo ciò che posso: disegnare e scrivere, fare collage, lavorare a maglia e cucire. Here I am, looking and feeling self-conscious, all ready for the grand opening and wondering if anyone would come. I still feel new to this city and country and also to the world of illustration. My first 6 picture books will be published in 2025 in England and nobody knows my work here in Italy. But we all have to begin somewhere, the important thing is beginning. Start where you are.
Eccomi qui, con un’aria e una sensazione di imbarazzo, pronta per la grande inaugurazione e chiedendomi se qualcuno sarebbe venuto. Mi sento ancora nuova in questa città e in questo paese e anche nel mondo dell’illustrazione. I miei primi 6 libri illustrati saranno pubblicati nel 2025 in Inghilterra e nessuno conosce il mio lavoro qui in Italia. Ma dobbiamo tutti iniziare da qualche parte, la cosa importante è iniziare. Inizia da dove sei.
Here it all is, a quick glance round the room now full of my work. The exhibition starts with my sketchbooks and my warm-up collages as they are also starting points for my work. There are picture book proposals, there’s my portfolio and one of my handmade dolls. But the real stars of the exhibition are my new illustrations of Gianfranco Zavalloni’s manifesto ‘The Ten Natural Rights of Children’. I will write another post specifically on this work and for ten daily will be posting daily about it in my newsletter, in celebration of World Children’s Day on the 20th November 2024.
Ecco qui tutto, una rapida occhiata alla stanza ora piena dei miei lavori. La mostra comincia con i miei schizzi e i miei piccoli collage, che sono anche punti di partenza per il mio lavoro. Ci sono proposte per albi illustrati, c’è il mio portfolio e una delle mie bambole fatte a mano. Ma le vere star della mostra sono le mie nuove illustrazioni del manifesto di Gianfranco Zavalloni “I Diritti Naturali dei bambini”. Scriverò un altro post specifico su questo lavoro e per 10 giorni pubblicherò quotidianamente nella mia newsletter per celebrare la Giornata mondiale dell’infanzia il 20 novembre 2024.

I work with collage and yarn in my illustrations and am very interested in textile arts. The characters in the illustrations I made for Zavalloni’s ‘Ten Natural Rights of Children’ have knitted bodies and are stitched onto the paper. I left the loose threads long on the back of the work because I just didn’t get round to trimming them. On reflection, they seemed an interesting addition to the work, a nod to the textile process, as they could be seen hanging down below the paper. Rather than trimming the threads and framing the work, I decided to leave the threads visible and hang the work unframed, even hanging some in open space to be viewed from the front and the back as is often done in textile art exhibitions.
Nelle mie illustrazioni lavoro con collage e filati e sono molto interessata alle arti tessili. I personaggi delle illustrazioni che ho realizzato per “Ten Natural Rights of Children” di Zavalloni hanno corpi lavorati a maglia e sono cuciti sulla carta. Ho lasciato i fili sciolti lunghi sul retro dell’opera perché non sono riuscita a tagliarli. Ho pensato che fossero un’aggiunta interessante all’opera, un cenno al processo tessile, poiché potevano essere visti penzolare sotto la carta. Invece di tagliare i fili e incorniciare l’opera, ho deciso di lasciare i fili visibili e appendere l’opera senza cornice, appendendone alcuni anche in uno spazio aperto per essere visti dal davanti e dal dietro, come spesso si fa nelle mostre di arte tessile.
Sketchbooks and dummy books are on display to be picked up and read. Making illustrations is such a lovely tactile experience for me, I really wanted visitors to the exhibition to be able to handle at least some of my work.
Libri di schizzi e bozze di albi illustrati sono esposti per essere presi in mano e letti. Per me, realizzare illustrazioni è un’esperienza tattile così bella che volevo davvero che i visitatori della mostra potessero maneggiare almeno alcuni dei miei lavori.
A moment of calm before the opening evening. Many thanks to my Dad who came to stay and help me get all of my work up on display. He also built the lovely holder for my butterfly business cards which we hung in the centre of the room.
Un momento di calma prima della serata inaugurale. Grazie infinite a mio padre che è venuto ad aiutarmi a esporre tutti i miei lavori. Ha anche costruito il grazioso porta biglietti da visita a forma di farfalla che abbiamo appeso al centro della stanza.
Many more people than I expected came to the opening event! People talked, they smiled, they studied my work, they asked questions, they congratulated me and they thanked me for a lovely evening. Many butterflies were taken home and many quiz sheets filled in. It was wonderful! I’ll tell you a few of my favourite moments.
All’evento di apertura sono venute molte più persone di quante mi aspettassi! La gente ha parlato, ha sorriso, ha studiato il mio lavoro, ha fatto domande, si è congratulata con me e mi ha ringraziato per la bella serata. Sono state portate a casa molte farfalle e sono stati compilati molti quiz. È stato meraviglioso! Vi racconterò alcuni dei miei momenti preferiti.
Friends who knew that I was a picture book illustrator but weren’t really sure what that meant, told me how surprised they were by my work. They thought I drew pictures, they had no idea that I actually ‘made’ pictures, with real paper and fabric and wool.
Gli amici che sapevano che ero un illustratore ma non capivano di cosa significasse, mi hanno detto quanto fossero sorpresi dalle mie opere. Pensavano che disegnassi immagini, non avevano idea che in realtà “realizzassi” immagini, con vera carta, stoffa e lana.
A one-year-old baby visiting with his parents wanted to hold one of the butterflies but his mother said he would ruin it because everything he held went in his mouth and he wasn’t very gentle with objects yet. I told her that if he ruined the first butterfly she could take another, so she gave hi the butterfly. All evening he played with it so gently, holding the thread and flying it about and never once putting it in his mouth. His mother said she’d never seen him be so involved with and careful of anything before. To have such a young child show so much enjoyment in something I had made was very special.
Un bambino di un anno in visita dai genitori voleva tenere in mano una delle farfalle, ma la madre disse che l’avrebbe rovinata perché tutto ciò che teneva in mano gli andava in bocca e non era ancora molto delicato con gli oggetti. Le dissi che se avesse rovinato la prima farfalla ne avrebbe potuta prendere un’altra, così gliela diede. Ci giocò tutta la sera così delicatamente, tenendo il filo e facendolo volare in giro senza mai metterselo in bocca. La madre disse che non lo aveva mai visto così coinvolto e attento a qualcosa prima. Vedere un bambino così piccolo mostrare così tanto divertimento per qualcosa che avevo fatto era davvero speciale.
The five-year-old son of friends took me by the arm and pulled me over to look at the little collage squares. He pointed to different pictures saying “how did you make this lovely picture? And this boat, how did you make it so beautiful?” I told him about cutting and gluing and stitching and having fun with my pictures and he listened. And then he said, “this one up here. This one is horrible!” His thoughts were coming from such an honest place, it was really touching that he was looking so carefully at my work and telling me so openly what he thought! I guess these are the realities of sharing work that you put your heart and soul into; some of it will find the right audience, and some will not. But genuine feedback is a gift.
Il figlio di amici mi prese per un braccio e mi tirò verso di lui per guardare i piccoli quadrati del collage. Indicò diverse immagini dicendo “come hai fatto a fare questa bella immagine? E questa barca, come hai fatto a renderla così bella?” Gli raccontai di come tagliavo, incollavo, cucivo e mi divertivo con le mie immagini e lui mi ascoltò. E poi disse “questa quassù. Questa è orribile!” I suoi pensieri provenivano da un luogo così onesto, era davvero toccante che stesse guardando così attentamente il mio lavoro e mi dicesse così apertamente cosa ne pensava! Immagino che queste siano le realtà della condivisione di un lavoro in cui metti cuore e anima; alcune troveranno il pubblico giusto, altre no. Ma un feedback genuino è un dono.
